Diabetes and gum disease
Do you know about the link between Diabetes and gum disease?
Our Hygiene Therapist Maddy tells us more….
“People with diabetes are more at risk of developing periodontal disease, which is a type of gum disease that can affect the bone around your teeth. The relationship is two way, so if you have gum disease it can put you at risk of type 2 diabetes.
Effective treatment of periodontal disease in patents who have type 2 diabetics can even improve glycaemic control. Early signs of gum disease can be hard to notice, but some of the symptoms include bleeding, soreness, bad breath.
The good news is if good oral hygiene is practised it can be prevented and if caught early treatment. If you have been diagnosed as diabetic it is important to see your dentist/hygienist regularly as they can monitor, treat and prevent this.”
