Mouth Cancer Awareness

13th annual Mouth Cancer Awareness walk in Hyde Park

It’s 5pm on Sunday evening and luckily me and my tired feet have managed to get a seat in Euston station whilst I wait for my train home. I decided to offer my time this weekend as a volunteer at the 13th annual Mouth Cancer Awareness walk in Hyde Park. “Why are you doing that?” I’ve been asked …..”why not !?” I say. I’m so glad I did it, it’s been a great day.

Hyde Park is a beautiful setting for the event, how lucky if you live in London to have such a picturesque place to walk, cycle or run in. Full of flowers, wildlife and the people watching opportunities are endless. I was up early to get across London to help set up for the walk, arriving at 8.45am I met the organisers and other volunteers and we quickly got to work setting up the area ready for the arrival of the participants later in the morning.

The walk was started to raise funds for the charity and also to help raise awareness of mouth cancer and spread the word about prevention and early detection. Hundreds of people of all ages came to take part including survivors of the disease.

I was one of the team registering people, giving out water, t-shirts and then goodie bags at the end. There was a mobile screening unit where people could have free mouth checks and a survivor came on stage to tell her story. You couldn’t help but get emotional hearing her journey and then thinking of those who have lost their lives as a role call was read for some of the people being remembered.

It was great seeing everyone’s faces as they crossed the finish and being able to congratulate them, a brilliant day for a brilliant cause.

I would definitely volunteer again for this or similar events, I get a real kick from the volunteering work I have been lucky enough to be involved in and will continue to do it when I can. I urge everyone to try it, there are loads of opportunities out there and whether it’s a day or an hour of your time you can give, someone somewhere will be grateful.

Dental Mavericks Asni Trip

Dental Mavericks Asni Trip

An Update From Our Very Own Dental Maverick Trustee, Michelle

I had a great trip last week, a very successful clinic. We were in Asni, a small town at the foot of atlas mountains.  We did a trek in the mountains one day with a local guide, 3 hrs and tough terrain but this is the kind of walk the local people do all the time just to get to markets or to school !

Stunning scenery, wonderful people but sadly a poor area and so dental health care is not readily available and the diet is high in sugar, so rates of decay are very high.  We worked in the local school and  provided fluoride applications, did extractions and a few fillings, but extractions mainly due to the decay rates.

Everyone gets a toothbrush, toothpaste, oral hygiene instruction.  Since we started the project 4 years ago ( now the 5th year) the rate of extractions we had to do has gone down.  We work in partnership with the Eve Branson Foundation on this project.

Over the 3 days in clinic we carried out 436 fluoride applications and 298 extractions ( a very small amount of the 298 would be filling maybe 15 or so, so mostly extraction).

Sean Completes The Birmingham half marathon

Two weeks ago on a very cold and wet Sunday, Sean took to the streets of Birmingham along with around 11,000 others to complete the Birmingham half marathon.

His 8th time completing the event, he ran to raise funds and awareness for a cause that means alot to him, Cardiac Risk in the Young.

In a reverse of previous routes, the Birmingham half marathon started where it ended last year, before taking runners to Highfield Road in Edgbaston and down the hill of Lee Bank Middleway, once a challenging incline near the end of the half marathon.

Participants then did a lap of Cannon Hill Park and Edgbaston Stadium before turning back to the city centre after they reached Bournville.

Posting his photo’s after the event Sean said..

“Well that was a wet one! Back home safe and sound, and just about dried out and got the feeling back into my fingers. Great run considering, a comfortable 1hr56…. again!”

Well Done Sean !

Here It Is Our Total Raised For Rough Runner – £1782.67

Thanks to everyone for their kind generosity and support.

To the team who ran the course you should all be super proud, we have smashed our target and all of us finished the course (with a few bumps and bruises).

All this money will go to providing dental care to the children of Morocco and the refugees in Lebanon, helping to end dental pain.

Here are some photos from the day…

We raised £739.00 for Dental Mavericks in 2017!

Dental Mavericks is our chosen charity that we support and do regular fund raising events. The charity helps to end daily dental pain for the children of Morocco and is involved in several initiatives helping Syrian refugees in Lebanon. Our very own Michelle has now been made a Trustee for the charity.

This year we have (with the help of our patients and suppliers) raised £739.00 for Dental Mavericks. £256.79 of this was used to buy supplies to take to the clinics in Greece this year and the rest gone to Mavericks for use in all areas.

Thank you!

Dental Mavericks Trip 2016

With Michelle & Joanna

mavs-1 mavs-2

After having to delay our original trip planned for 2015 with Dental Mavericks I was like an excited child on Christmas morning this year as we made our way to Heathrow to catch our flight to Morocco.

Although you get a perception in mind of how the experience may be, from the pictures you see and what the other Mavericks tell you, nothing can beat actually going yourself and experiencing it first hand.

The local people in Khizana where myself and Joanna visited were all so welcoming, hospitable and oh so happy to see us! Over two days we helped to treat over 400 patients.

A mixture of children and adults which sadly included a lot of extractions for teeth that were too decayed to save, but the team were also able to carry out some fillings this year for the first time as well as carrying out fluoride applications again.

The people of Khizana are amazing, they trusted us completely, despite the language barrier they were happy to let us treat them and the smiles and thanks we received after we had got them out of pain was just brilliant.

Dental Mavericks I will definitely be back ! Amazing experience to be able to give back.

A big thank you to everyone who has supported our fundraising and donated items!!

Charity Cupcake Sale

Heath Dental’s Charity Cupcake Sale:
Another helping hand!

charity day

It certainly wasn’t a conventional idea; hosting a cupcake sale in a dental practice! But in the interest of raising yet more money for charity, Principal Sat Kelley made an exception. After losing three young patients at the practice Heath Dental has become more aware of the charities their families now support and couldn’t wait to lend a hand.

Following the very successful Zumbathon back in April this year, the practice were just looking for the next event to get their teeth into. No one knew then it would be into cake!

One of the young girls, Aoife O’Connor used to hold her own cupcake sales in aid of charity, her parents told Heath Dental, and so with this as inspiration the whole team rallied round to put on their own amazing cupcake sale in memory.

Most of the team made their own creations and were even donated cakes from patients and Terry and the team at Coffee Cloud! Local business Coffee Cloud!

A fun day was had by all and after a round of Dickens Heath by mascot Snappy only a few cakes remained. The final sum stood at £260, which is brilliant on its own but when Sat Kelley offered to round the figure up to £300 the whole team was really thrilled.

Every penny raised will be donated to a charity chosen by Aoife’s family, The Brain Tumour Charity.

Heath Dental wants to thank everyone for their continued generosity. The practice will continue to extend a helping hand into the Dickens Heath community.

Zumbathon 2013

The sun was shining and it was a lovely dry day on Sunday 28th April 2013 in preparation for Heath Dental’s charity Zumbathon at the Village Hall in Dickens Heath Solihull.

Over the last couple of years 3 youngsters, Niamh Riley, Blake Melbourne and Aoife O’Connor aged between 12 and 14, have sadly been lost through illnesses. As they were patients to the practice along with their families, when hearing of their tragic passing, the practice wanted to help the families in some way, and a charity event in their memory seemed the best way to do this.

"Zumbathon in action!"

The idea of the Zumbathon came from conversations Heath Dental had with some of the parent’s in order to organise an event which was fun and easy to follow which meant that anyone could get involved. Some of the team are already huge Zumba fans and excitement was felt by all.

The practice had a brilliant turn out on the day from the whole team and their children along with all the friends and families of the 3 youngsters and members of the Dickens Heath community. The Zumbathon ran for 3 hours from 12:45pm and an energetic and positive atmosphere filled the hall.

Jayne Franklin donated her services as a professional Zumba instructor on the day and put on a stunning performance, which really motivated everyone involved. Even the new Heath Dental mascot, still to be named, made its debut on the dance floor and delighted all.

Money being raised is being donated charities chosen by the families of the children; Brain Tumour UK and Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research, which does excellent work and research with support from the public.

"The Heath Dental team with friends and family of Aoife O’Connor, Niamh Riley and Blake Melbourne"

The practice received tremendous support and help from local businesses. Hughes Scaffolding, Cre8 Fitness who raised over £300, Coffee Cloud also joined us and raised a brilliant £222, 247 professional Health, Tesco Dickens Heath and Sainsbury’s, supplied bottled water, which was gratefully received by all the participants; and Last but by no means least, all the wonderfully generous patients, who together with all other donations, have contributed to the running total to date of £2500!

The whole team at Heath Dental want to say a massive thank you to Jayne Franklin who ran all of the Zumba sessions free of charge, everyone who took part including families, the local business sponsors and everyone who gave up their hard earned time and money for such a great cause.

The practice is not a stranger to charity work and has raised money on several occasions over the past years for different charities, with the help of all their supportive patients and local business’. The whole team feels it is an important part of their standing in the community and is always looking for their next event.
